Project Overview / Description

Sunwater is delivering the Lower Burdekin Rising Groundwater Mitigation (LBRGWM) Project as a critical program of off-farm actions to respond to rising groundwater and salinity levels.

The Burdekin Haughton Water Supply Scheme (BHWSS) is a Sunwater-owned and operated water distribution scheme, located approximately 90km south of Townsville near the township of Clare and it includes Channel H10 on Cadio Road, Upper Haughton. Channel H10 Bay 4 was identified as a significant contributor to rising groundwater in the area and consequently recommended for upgrade by impervious lining under the LBRGWM project.

Sunwater engaged CivilPlus Constructions to reprofile and line Channel H10 Bay 4 during the June 2025 shutdown. The liner was a 2.0 mm thick HDPE geomembrane which is a barrier preventing water migration into the ground. The channel was also reshaped to restore its original profile.

The channel reprofiling and lining work was completed in the annual two-week Sunwater shutdown.

Project Features:

    • Channel dewatering
    • Performed 15,000 tonne of earthworks
    • Installed 38,480 m2 of 2.0 mm HDPE geomembrane.
    • Modified 11 existing concrete structures.
    • Constructed six new concrete stormwater outlets.
