Project Overview / Description

The Lucinda Bulk Sugar Terminal (LBST) jetty tail end underwent a staged structural refurbishment to address deterioration of the existing prestressed concrete deck and associated marine infrastructure. The works involved a combination of full deck replacement, in-situ concrete for new headstocks, new fire main installations, bridge railings, asphalt surfacing, and structural strengthening to extend the service life of the asset while maintaining operational functionality.
The works were undertaken within a live operational marine environment with strict load and access constraints, requiring detailed planning, temporary works with RPEQ sign-off, and staged construction methodologies to ensure safety, continuity of bulk sugar operations, and compliance with design requirements.

Project Features:

    • Marine structural refurbishment within a live operational environment including staged demolition, strengthening, and new construction works.
    • Demolition of existing decks and headstocks including de-tensioning of prestressed bars, saw cutting coring and lifting with cranes.
    • Construction of new concrete headstocks as well as repairs to existing steel headstocks (abrasive blasting and application to protective coating systems).
    • Installation of new prestressed concrete deck units, including post-tensioning and integration with the existing jetty structure.
    • Existing concrete repair and strengthening works including hydro-demolition and reinforcement treatment.
    • Cathodic protection system integration including temporary decommissioning, continuity maintenance and full reinstatement upon completion.
    • Seashield system installation to piles for durability and corrosion protection.
    • Bridge rail and guardrail installation.
    • Asphalt surfacing works to the completed deck area for the final wearing surface.
    • Pile remediation works undertaken by scaffold and floating pontoon access.
    • Extensive temporary works; scaffold platforms, suspended access systems (4 of, 5 tonne steel structure Temporary Platforms lowered / raise with hoists), crane pads etc.
    • Crane operation (220 tonne all terrain) for the removal of existing decks and headstocks and installation of new prestressed decks.
    • UTS Survey controlled construction.
    • Installation of duplex stainless steel strengthening plates fixed with bolts through existing deck units and bonded using epoxy grout.
